Frontal Airbags (Driver and Passenger)

In frontal crashes, driver airbags reduce fatalities by approximately 25% and reduce serious head injuries by over 60%. For front-seat passengers, fatalities are reduced by approximately 20%.

The driver airbag is located in the steering wheel, and the passenger airbag in the front panel. Frontal airbags are deployed in less than 50 milliseconds. As per regulation, airbags for side protection have to be fully inflated within 15 milliseconds, which is eight times faster than the blink of an eye. Once an airbag deploys, deflation begins immediately as the gas escapes through vent holes in the fabric. A frontal airbag is empty after approximately one second.

Knee Airbags

Knee airbags significantly reduce the risk for injuries to the knee, thigh and hip. Knee airbags are located below the steering column on the driver's side.

On the passenger side, the airbag is usually mounted below the glove box. The knee airbag not only reduces leg injuries but also provides benefits for the head and chest by keeping the occupant in the proper position to receive maximum protection afforded by the regular frontal airbag.

Side Airbags

凯发登录Side airbags are estimated to reduce serious chest injuries in side-impact collisions by approximately 25%.

Thorax-Side Airbags
凯发登录 The bag usually has a volume of only 8 to 12 liters to make it as gentle as possible but still efficient enough to provide the required protection. The thorax bag is inflated within 12 thousandths of a second, four times faster than a frontal airbag.

Head-Thorax Side Airbags
The bag combines head and thorax protection in side-impact collisions for one occupant and is often used where the inflatable curtain (which also provides protection in rollovers as well as for near-seat occupants) cannot be mounted, such as in convertible cars.

Pelvis-Thorax
凯发登录 These airbags are designed to reduce the risk of injury to the thorax and pelvic regions. To achieve this improved protection, the airbag coverage area is extended by adding a cell which is inflated to a higher pressure in order to distribute the load over the occupant’s thorax and pelvic region more efficiently. The pelvis-thorax airbag is located in the back-rest frame of the car seat.

Curtain Airbags

Side-curtain airbags reduce the risk of life-threatening head injuries in side impacts by approximately 50% for passengers sitting on the side of the vehicle that is struck.

凯发登录Side-curtain airbags form a cushion between the occupant and the window, protecting the occupant’s head from striking the side of the car or intruding vehicles in side-impact crashes.

凯发登录Autoliv developed a specially designed door-mounted inflatable curtain (DMIC) for convertible vehicles. This airbag is made up of a multitude of small cells in three layers (like a beehive). This ingenious structure gives it unsurpassed stability and as a result it can be used in different situations, such as rollovers, since the structure is strong enough to hold the occupants safely inside the vehicle in many severe accidents.

Front Center Airbags

凯发登录A far-side impact is a collision that impacts the opposite side of the vehicle relative to the occupant.  Far-side impacts currently account for over 40% of collisions with a serious injury outcome.

Far-side impacts can induce injuries through excessive neck/spine bending in a single-driver situation or though driver-to-passenger contact in a dual-occupant situation.

Inflators

Inflators are used to fill the airbag cushion during a crash. Autoliv’s single-stage and dual-stage inflator technologies are proven to meet the most stringent governmental and customer requirements worldwide

凯发登录Inflators produce a quantity of gas, with a certain composition and temperature, at a controlled rate, which then fills the airbag system to sufficiently cushion an automobile occupant from certain injury scenarios.

Pyrotechnic Inflator
凯发登录 A pyrotechnic is a chemical material that burns at a controlled rate to produce gas, heat or particles.

A gas generant is a pyrotechnic whose primary output is gas.

Autoliv’s pyrotechnic inflators contain a core of solid gas generant. During a crash, this generant is ignited and produces a harmless nitrogen-based gas as it burns. This gas is then forced through filters in the inflator which cool the gas and remove particulates. As the gas exits the inflator, it enters the airbag cushion, deploying it in time to provide lifesaving protection for the vehicle’s occupants.

Stored Gas Inflator
Gas is produced by a controlled release of gas that is stored at a high pressure.

凯发登录Unlike our pyrotechnic inflator designs, Autoliv’s stored gas designs rely on compressed gas to deploy the airbag. Our hybrid designs use an internal pyrotechnic heating device to compensate for the cooling effect resulting from the expansion of the compressed gas when the airbag deploys. Other award-winning designs, such as our side impact and head protection inflators, use stored nitrous or helium to inflate our safety restraints. These stored gas technologies offer a cooler gas alternative to solid pyrotechnic inflators.

Initiators and Micro Gas Generators

凯发登录Autoliv manufactures two small yet key components that are critical to the ignition process which causes an airbag to deploy.

Initiators
凯发登录 Similar to a spark plug in design the initiator or gas generant, is ignited using electrically triggered initiators which provide a reliable, tunable ignition of the individual shapes of airbag inflator sequences. Using glass-to-metal technology and environmentally friendly raw materials, Autoliv initiators can be tailored for customer-specific connector interfaces as well as for axial or radial output direction.


Micro Gas Generators
These small gas generators utilize an inflation method similar to their larger airbag counterparts. But their smaller size enables us to integrate them into our pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioning products.
